MADDY
With Jared and Sam exploring outside, Iâm trying on dresses and taking one of the few opportunities I get to have some serious girl talk with Lucy.
As I wriggle into a blue dress with a zipper at the back, she sips her coffee.
âSam wants to camp out here tonight. She doesnât want to go home,â she says.
I chuckle. âCamping out here can be fun,â I say.
Lucy, ever the city girl pulls a face. âJared says sheâs like you at that age. Should I be worried?â
I laugh and turn around so she can zip me up. âOnly if you donât want her to grow up to be awesome,â I say.
Lucy groans as she zips me up. âIâll take that as a yes, I should be worried.â
I smooth the dress down at the sides, and since I donât have a full-length mirror, make a âhow do I lookâ gesture.
Lucy appraises me, and squints. âNot sure. Try the pale green one. I think it might suit your complexion more.â
Iâm not exactly into fashion, or really care, so I defer to her judgment, and climb out of the dress.
As she passes me the green dress, my thoughts return to the man I wish they wouldnât.
âYou remember how Jared was at his worst? The nightmares, how his hands shook, and he used to jump at loud noises?â
I can hear the pain in her voice as she replies. âOf course, I do. Why?â
I turn and face her, feeling like shit for making her think about it again. âIâm sorry to bring it up, itâs just I met someone, and he has a lot of the same issues as Jared did,â I say.
Her interest seems to overtake her pain at discussing it. âHeâs a Vet?â
I nod. âHe was stranded here, so I fixed his car, and we had, um, you know, a thing,â I say.
She gives me a wry smile. âI know. Jared told me. Although he referred to him as a transient,â she says.
I scowl at the window. âHardly, he wasnât short on cash, and he was on his way to Phoenix from...â
When I draw a blank, I realize I never ever stopped to ask him where he was from.
But Lucy has moved on, and when her eyes shift to my neck, I belatedly realize now Iâm not wearing my coveralls the bruising is visible.
âWhat happened to your neck? Those arenât hickeys youâve been hiding.â
I shrug my shoulders up and try in vain to hide. âUm, nothing,â I say.
She gives me her best mom look and shakes her head. âCome on. Spill. Weâve got time before Jared and Sam get back.â
I release a sigh as I drop my shoulders. âNot much time. And Iâd rather not get caught talking about this,â I say.
When she gives me an encouraging look, I carry on. âI had an incredible weekend with Miller, then he left, but I think I can help him, you know, the way you helped Jared see the silver lining,â I say.
Lucyâs eyes widen, and her mouth slackens before her voice drops to a whisper.
